The Power of K: NC Kindergarten Position Statement
Because the early childhoodyears, birth through age 8, are the most powerful years for learning,growth and development in the life of a child and because kindergartenholds a place in the education of a student as one of the foundationsfor the attitudes about learning that children and families will carrywith them throughout their years of schooling and beyond, it iscritical that NC kindergarten programs provide a solid educational anddevelopmental base for all children. The Power of K: NC Kindergarten Teacher Leader Initiative
This 3-year long-term professional development initiative was established in 2007 to strengthen North Carolina's Kindergarten classrooms. Of 219 teachers who applied, funding was available for the selection of 35 teachers. Over the past years of the project, the teachers and their principals have been exploring ways to create classrooms that are designed for 5-year-old children while providing a rigorous curriculum for all students.
